Hallett Race Continued

Going through the last turn is a trio of Group 2 cars including the #88 Mini of Greg Wold who is lapping the Midget and Alfa GTV during the 1st race Saturday morning.  Wold went on to win 3 out of the 3 races he finished, dropping out of the 2nd race because of a vibration in a wheel which turned out to be wheel weights hitting the brake caliper in hard turns.
Trevor Bond of Dallas/Ft. Worth area pushes his way up the hill out of the next to last turn and heads to the last turn onto the start/finish straight. This is one of the famous "Purple People Eater" cars from famed Overseas Motors out of Ft. Worth.  They won the SCCA championship back in the good ol' days. Word has it that the other Purple People Eater is back in Texas and might be racing again.

Weird Encounter of the old kind: I saw this Z in the pits and noticed a decal on the rear fender that I couldn't believe I was seeing. It was a decal for a small but active car club where my wife and I met when I was in the service in San Antonio over 30 years ago. A club defunct since the mid 70s.  It was called Checkpointers.  My future wife was the club's vice-president at the time.

This guy had been a member at the same time and had the decals made up for his car, using plaques on trophies he'd won as a guide.  He wanted to have some "period correct" decals on the car and had this decal made up, along with an old Dallas club's that's sported by several CVAR cars.

The driver is Berkeley Merrill, M.D., from Ft. Worth,  a med student and rallye driver at the time. That Z, by the way, was very quick, finishing in the top five overall.  I don't remember him and he didn't remember me. Fair enough.  But he's getting me a couple of those decals for my Mini.
