"Celebrating the PCGP continued"

Dick Durant in his Durant Special at Lake Afton, KS

Dick Durant, St. Louis, was often seen in Ponca City and is pictured here in his Corvette powered Durant Special (47) at Ponca's "sister" race, the Lake Afton Grand Prix, which was also a road course through a county park.

The #66 car was driven by H. R. "Red" Stanford, Bartlesville, who drove my husband's TR-4 at the 1967 American Road Race of Champions at Daytona after this Healey was destroyed when hit as it was "parked" during a race. My husband's car is gridded next to the black TR-4 (right) and was being driven by Sid Adair, Tulsa, since my husband wasn't old enough to drive. (circa 1965). This particular weekend, I am told, was wet and a bit chilly, unlike most of the races we attended in the 70s and 80s that were well into the 100s.

Mel Bogus in his fast Datsun 2000

Mel Bogus, St. Louis Region Regional Executive at the time, is pictured in his Datsun 2000 in the 1971 PCGP program. According to the program, he was leading the Midwest Div. in DP at the time. This photo is not taken at Ponca.

Bolus & Snopes Shelby GT350

The Bolus & Snopes Shelby GT350 Mustang SFM 6S1828, driven by Bob Mitchell of Huntsville, AL, was pictured in the 1971 program; the GP was to have been the second outing of the car that year. Mitchell, according to the program, was a former SCCA National Champion and , according to another source, was the guy who saw to the car's conversion from a Hertz car to a full fledged racer.

The original owner was Sam E. Scott, Hazelhurst, MS, and half-interest was sold to William Jeanes, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. You may remember the team by way of its team mascot, a sorrel mule named Dick Johnson. The team had two ARRC runs, resulting in a DNF and a 5th place. The team acquired its name from Ovid Bolus and Flem Snopes. The car is still raced in vintage events by John Baldwin, Covington, LA. This information comes to us by way of Howard Pardee, who is always a great help in tracking down the histories of Shelby cars, and the Shelby American Automotive Club's The Shelby American Wold Registery 1997.

Yep, Dave Dooley in a Corvette...believe it or not.

Yes, Dave Dooley is pictured in a Corvette in the 1971 program. Dooley was with the Sunoco Team of Don Yenko and drove the car in 1969 (pictured here in the pits) and 1970.
