"Celebrating the

40th Anniversary of the

Ponca City Grand Prix"

Cover of the 1971 Ponca City GP program

This Past 60 Days I have received several emails and guests at my guestbook site who have asked questions and made comments about the Ponca City GP. The latest have been Nick England who is looking for background on his restored Beach Mk 4 DSR and Jeff Chambers, son of long-time St.L Region racer Lloyd Chambers, who was looking for some photos of Dick Durant.

So, since this is the 30th anniversary of the first PCGP I attended and the 40th of the race itself, I thought I'd have this addition of the gallery be a tribute to the great race track. Some of the photos have been lifted out of the 1971 program while the others are from proof sheets of ours taken in the 70s. We have not located the negs and these are the only prints we have right now, so don't be too critical of the quality.

Tech Crew Members from Wichita, Kansas

Wichita Technical Inspectors Don Berger (left), often found in Mt. Hope, KS, and Steve Malcom, Andover, KS, walk down pit lane at a Ponca City GP race in the early 70s. My husband and I became members of the crew right after we married and moved to Ponca when we did not have a race car ready. If I was a betting person, I'd bet that was Joe Locario, the Houston Alfa driver, in that pith helment in the backround. This might be 1972, the first PCGP event where I worked tech.

The Backbone of the Wichita Tech Crew: Mary Ann Caffrey of Mt. Hope, Kansas.

The Backbone of the Wichita Tech Crew and one of our best friends and a great person who worked many long hours making sure everyone was legal and safe was the late Mary Ann Caffrey, Mt. Hope, KS, shown here at an early 70s PCGP race directing traffic. Her husband and fellow Tech Inspector, Paul Caffrey, is pictured elsewhere in the gallery, and her children are shown in the Family Race Photos section.
