"Back in the Saddle, again"

I'm back, after a summer layoff. I'm bringing you a fairly broad range of photos this time. Hope you enjoy them.



Morgan and Austin Healey are pictured in the infield road course section of Daytona Speedway in 1965 at the American Road Race of Champions. You can tell what Division and standing the car is by the number. If my husband is not mistaken, the Morgan was the #2 car in region 6 that year. My husband was there as a crew member for Jenks, Oklahoma, Sprite driver George Cowherd.

 

Morris Minor and Saab go through the first turn at Ponca City Grand Prix's turn 1 in June of 1964, my husband's first sports car race as a spectator and photographer. The photo was taken with an 4x5 Speed Graphic sheet film camera with a, believe it or not, telephoto lens from the spectator area. Bulky thing he tells me. Note there are not guardrails. My husband went off this turn at speed in his TR4 a few years later...and missed all the trees. There are other great, if I must say so myself, Ponca Grand Prix photos in last year's galleries, especially the first two. Every time I see these photos I feel sad that the race, along with Lake Afton, is still not held. Wouldn't it make a great vintage event? All the history of the track and so forth coupled with the cars that had run there. Maybe that could be it: strictly for cars that ran the race there. Think there are enough left? We know where a couple are anyway.
