"Variety is the spice of life" Continued
James Lee, of Altus, Oklahoma, and now of Corpus Christi, drives his Triumph TR4, my husband's fomer car, up onto the scales during impound after an SCCA National race at Lake Afton near Wichita, Kansas, in early 80s. My husband and I worked tech inspection for the Wichita Region for several years with Paul and Mary Ann Caffrey of Mt. Hope. That weekend was a scorcher with temps up near 110 degrees. James still owns that car and is doing a major, basically frame-off restoration of it in preparation to driving it in vintage races in very near future. This race car has been in the Lee family, with the exception of about 1 year, since 1965.
Scooter Patrick, probably the best known driver in the race, is shown at speed in a Porsche 911 he drove with a California fellow named Smith during the Monterrey 1000 in Mexico in 1971 where they finished 5th Overall and 3rd in the U2 class. They completed 288 laps or 864 kilometers, 10 laps or 30 miles behind the class winning car of Dick Durant, St. Louis, and Gordon Smiley.
The winning car was a Chevron sports racer driven by Freddy Van Beuren and Rodolfo Junco who completed 334 laps or 1002 kilometers in 6 hours, 31 minutes. My husband and his friend, Paul Piper, completed 227 laps or 681 kilometers in their 1100 cc powered Mini which gave fellow U2 class teams nearly a 1000cc edge. They also had a break down on the course which cost them some important time and probably several finishing positions. They were, however, classified a finisher, running at the end and completing the mandatory percentage of laps. They finished 19th out of 30/32 starters and 21 cars running at end.
